Independent Legal Advice
There are a number of situations in which a person ought to receive independent legal advice (ILA) prior to signing an agreement:
You attended mediation in order to reach an agreement with your former spouse
You and your former spouse have worked with a Family Justice Counsellor to reach agreement on parenting and support issues
Your former spouse has provided you with a draft agreement, whether interim or final, for your signature
Too many people sign agreements in the heat of a moment and later have regrets. It is critical that you make informed decisions that are practical for you and and your family. You can retain us to review your agreement and provide you with personalized advice, including proposed language for recommended changes. You may also decide to have us communicate with your spouse or their lawyer on your behalf.
There are flat fee options available for ILA which includes a thorough review of your draft agreement, a meeting with you to review the law applicable in your situation and the specific terms in your draft agreement, as well as our recommendations for changes, if any. If significant negotiation or revisions are required, additional costs may apply.
If you have a draft agreement and require ILA, contact us to schedule an intro call or paid consultation.
